Olympic Games, international athletic competition, held every four years at a different city site. A modified revival of the Olympian
Games, the Olympic Games were inaugurated in the spring of 1896, largely through the efforts of the French sportsman and educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin. This competition evolved into the Summer Olympics—the subject of this article. The Winter Olympics began in 1924 and were held in the same year as the Summer Olympics until 1994, since when the winter games have alternated with the summer games in even-numbered years.
About 120 years ago a Frenchman called Baron Pierre de Coubertin became interested in the old Olympian Games. He believed they could be revived for athletes, not just from Greece but from around the world. The Games would test their endurance, strength and skills. Like the former Games, he decided that the new Games should be held in Greece. Athens, the capital, hosted the spectacular event in 1896. Every four years since, except when there has been a major world war, many of the world’s best sportsmen and sportswomen have competed at an Olympic Games.
WINTER OLYMPICS
In 1924 the IOC staged the first Winter Olympics. These were also held in every Olympic year, but in different cities from the Summer Games—the cities needed to be able to provide snowy and icy conditions for skiing and skating events. Cities and towns in the Alps in Europe, Scandinavia, Japan and North America have hosted the Games.
From 1994 the Winter Olympics moved so that they take place two years before every Summer Olympics.
SUMMER GAMES EVENTS
At the Summer Games there are many different events but only three have been held at every staging of the
Games. They are athletics, swimming and fencing.
Women first took part in the Olympics in 1900 in croquet and tennis. They were not allowed to compete in swimming until 1912 and had to wait until 1928 before they competed in athletics. Some sports are no longer included, and they are said to be “discontinued”. These include the tug of war, the standing high jump, swimming under water and cricket.
Unit state is the only country which won the most gold medals . person with most medals in Olympics is Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina. She won 18 medals, in which 9 are gold medals.
